As many as 200 workers may have been exposed to a dangerous chemical at a Matamoros maquiladora.

The El Milenio newspaper reported the toxic leak occurred at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday.

The newspaper reported that the leak took place at the Shumex factory in Matmoros' industrial park.

Company officials told the newspaper that 450 people were working at three units of the plant when the leak occurred.

It's not clear what chemical was leaked into the air but officials evacuated the buildings after some workers began to faint and others complained of headaches.

El Milenio reported that as many as 200 workers may have been affected by the gas.

They are recovering at home and local hospitals.
