Failing to use a turn signal turned into a chase that landed an accused alleged marijuana smuggler behind bars in Starr County.

Rio Grande City police arrested Gustavo Alonso Mendoza on Saturday.

Federal court records show that Mendoza failed to use his turn signal to change lanes along U.S. Expressway 83 in Rio Grande City.

The 28-year-old man allegedly sped off at speeds up to 100 mph instead of pulling over.

Mendoza led police on a chase that almost wrecked with several vehicles and telephone pole for bailing out of his truck.

Officers arrested Mendoza before he could flee in the brush.

Court records show that tuthorities found 1,107 pounds of marijuana inside his gold Chevrolet truck.

Mendoza had served two years in federal prison for a Laredo marijuana case.

He told authorities that he knew it was wrong but needed the money.

Mendoza appeared before a federal magistrate judge in McAllen on Tuesday where he was denied bond pending another hearing.
