CAMERON COUNTY -- A Brownsville family issued a Call 4 Action after their mother was allegedly being mistreated at a local healthcare facility.
Darlene Salazar claims the Solara long-term acute care hospital won’t let her 78-year-old mother leave.
"The care that my mom has been receiving is inadequate," Salazar said. "It’s inhumane and no one should be going there."
She told Action 4 News that when her mother was brought to the center after being released from the hospital nine days ago.
But soon they realized something was wrong.
"We started seeing things weren't, you know appropriate," Salazar said. "One of the things we did notice was that whenever a bed pan was asked for it would take them 10-15 minutes to bring her the bed pan."
On top of that, the family claims while visiting, they'd catch their mom covered in feces which has left her with a serious rash on her backside.
The family takes pictures for evidence but they are too graphic to show.
"She’s got a horrendous rash, she missing at least two layers of her skin, because of this rash that was never taken care of by these people," Salazar said.
Now, all they want is their mother to be transferred.
"We want her transferred out of here," Salazar told Action 4 News. "We’re not allowed to transfer her out. Yesterday the doctor would not sign the orders to have her transferred."
A meeting was called this Monday with the management at Solara.
While trying to get Solara's side of the story, Action 4 News was kicked out of the property.
Meanwhile inside the meeting, Solara managers say they were unaware of the problem, pointing out that it was solely the fault of one of their employees abusing their power.
The Salazar family was told their mother would be released but if those plans don't follow through they are going to seek legal help.
The family adds they have already contacted Adult Protective Services.
According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, in one year over 44,000 cases of elderly abuse were confirmed in Texas.
Anyone who has a family members being neglected or abused at a nursing home, can contact the National Nursing Home Abuse hotline at 1-800-458-9858.
