BLUETOWN, TEXAS -- An 11 year old Cameron County girl has died after a driver went around a school bus and hit her with his car.

Texas Department of Public Safety state troopers said the accident happened on Tuesday morning off U.S. Highway 281 and FM 506 in the rural community of Bluetown.

State troopers said a school bus was picking up children and had the stop sign activiated.

Under state law, motorists must stop when a school bus flashes it's warning lights.

But state troopers said the driver of a Mercury Marquis went around the shoulder and hit 11 year old Valeria Garcia.

The driver was identified as Arturo Martinez Reyes of Weslaco.

State troopers said Valerie died from her injuries on Tuesday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Reyes would likely face criminally negligent homicide charges.

Family members are now making funeral arrangements for Valeria.
