Edcouch-Elsa school board members voted to fill a $100,000 position despite a financial crunch that led to laying off almost 200 employees.

School members voted to move an existing employee into the open slot is for an assistant superintendent position. The job pays more than $100,000.

The move follows a multi-million budget shortfall that led to the layoffs of 199 employees.

The school district's attorney Javier Villalobos said the job is not a new position.

Villalobos said the position is a lateral move for an employee on a position that's already included in the school budget.

The school district could face another round of layoffs next year.
