Mexican comedian named 'Mr. Amigo'

Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez has been named as Mr. Amigo for Brownsville's Charro Days

The announcment was made on Monday.

Derbez is known for his comic roles both in television and film.

He recently played the donkey's voice in the Mexican release of Shrek but is also known for his work in the comedy variety shows and the sitcom "La Familia P. Luche."

Each year, Brownsville residents honor a Mexican citizen to promote the developing quality of life in the Hispanic community.

Mr. Amigo is chosen based on their contribution to the international friendship and understanding between the United States and Mexico.

Past honorees include soap opera star Angelica Vale and newscaster Lolita Ayala.

Charro Days is scheduled to run Feb. 26 thru Feb. 28, 2009.
