A Matamoros man is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after he allegedly swam across the Brownsville Ship Channel with more than 98 pounds of marijuana.

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested 47-year-old Jose Guadalupe Cabrera-Pastor in the Brownsville Ship Channel around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators told Action 4 News the Cabrera-Pastor swam across the channel with three bundles of marijuana weighing 98.9 pounds.

Authorities turned the case over to the San Benito Police Department because the weight of the marijuana did not meet the threshold for federal prosecution.

Cabrera-Pastor appeared before a San Benito Municipal Court Judge on where he was issued a $30,000 dollar bond.

The Matamoros man remains in custody in the Cameron County Jail under a U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer.
