Workforce Solutions Cameron is one of 28 workforce agencies participating in the “Hire Red, White and You” Job Fair initiative this Thursday.

Program Manager Maria Sosa tells Action 4 News the tough economy is making it hard for many these days to find jobs, and  sometimes things are even tougher on veterans - especially for those who have recently returned from war.

"Specifically for veterans, there's that difficulty because of those skills sets that they have and how they can get applied into the workforce,” Sosa said. “Part of what we are trying to do with this statewide initiative, is make that connection (between) veterans  (and) employers."

The sate-wide job fair is an initiative by Gov. Rick Perry and Dr. Red Duke of the Texas Medical Center.

Sosa said veterans should attend the job fair in business attire and prepared for on the spot interviews in career paths from manufacturing to law enforcement.

"One of (veterans’) best assets in the work force is that they're able to take direction because they've been in that structured environment throughout their military career,” Sosa said. “Security, police, law enforcement - those type of careers would be ideal for someone coming out of the military."

The event will be held Nov. 15, at The University of Texas at Brownsville ITECC center located on Mexico Boulevard, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sosa adds that organizers understand veterans my not have a resume printed out or maybe have one that needs tweaking.

However, she said there will be help available on-site to print or update resumes.

"We encourage everyone to bring their resume with them, but if they don’t have it updated, they can bring it in a thumb drive,” Sosa said. “We are going to have a mobile unit out there in the parking lot.  They can connect there, we'll have staff readily available to assist them with changes, upgrades, print (resumes) and then go into the job fair.”

The job fair is targeted towards veterans but is open to anyone looking for a job.
