BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- Democrat Filemon Vela has been elected to Congress out of a new U.S. House district in South Texas.

Vela defeated Republican Jessica Puente Bradshaw Tuesday in the race for the 34th Congressional District.

Vela was considered a favorite in the race to win the heavily Latino district, which runs down the Texas coast into the Rio Grande Valley. Vela, a Brownsville attorney, is the son of a longtime former federal judge in the city.

His wife is a state appeals court judge who decided to drop her bid this year to become the court's chief justice due to her husband's run.
