University of Texas Pan American Police Chief Roger Lee Stearns took our Action 4 News cameras through the moments that led up to a UTPA student being kidnapped in broad daylight on Tuesday.
He said the student was walking to her car when two men in a pick-up pulled up behind her and forced her inside their vehicle.
“While she was attempting to get into her vehicle two men pulled up behind her and grabbed her from behind,” Stearns explained.
Numerous people witnessed the incident and called police right away.
"Because it was day light it was easy for them to see and they immediately notified law enforcement."
An email alert was sent out—but not a Bronc Alert—something many UTPA students rely on for important information regarding safety.
"There was not a continuing or eminent threat to the university or community. Instead we used our crime line email e-blast that goes out to all faculty, students, and staff."
Chief Stearns said they had no reason to believe any other student would be in danger.
"No. We didn't believe they would come back for any other students."
This recent kidnapping has put the university on high alert.
Stearns said—while they have always placed safety at the top of their list—they are now taking that extra step to make sure everyone attending or visiting the campus feel safe at all times.
One way---by expanding their security camera system to now include parking lots.
"There is some coverage in the parking lots---this was not one of them. Hopefully when we are finished with the installation we will have a system that will cover all of the lots on campus.
As for the kidnapping…very few details are being released…Chief Stearns said to protect the student and those working the case.
