Former Weslaco mayor Joe V. Sanchez is in critical condition after his wife accidentally ran over him.

Sanchez is waiting to undergo surgery at McAllen Medical Center Tuesday following the Friday afternoon accident.

A family member tells Action 4 News the former mayor's wife accidentally hit her husband while driving out of the driveway at their Weslaco home on the corner of Airport Drive and 7th Street.

Sanchez is said to have a fractured skull, five broken ribs, torn ligaments in one foot, as well as other cuts and bruises.

Luckily, the family reports there are no signs of brain damage.

Sanchez is expected to stay in the ICU for a couple days following his surgery.

Sanchez served as mayor from 2001 to 2007.
