San Benito police have tracked down a woman accused of taking another woman's wallet at HEB.

Police said the wallet was left behind at the check-out register by accident, and that's when the suspect took advantage.

On Friday morning, 23-year-old Ruby Sanchez was arrested at her home on Resaca Lane.

She had been wanted since June, when the alleged theft occurred.

Police said surveillance video helped pin Sanchez to the crime.

Sanchez cried during her arraignment as a judge charged her with theft for a bond of $5,000.

According to police, Sanchez took a wallet from HEB after the customer in front of her forgot it.

Instead of turning it into store managers, police said Sanchez made off with the wallet, which according to the victim, had important documents and about $1,000 in cash.

"As far as the transactions and the number,” said Investigator Rogelio Banda. “We also discovered that the woman was using a state issued debit card. After that, we contacted the Department of Human Services, who then provided us with the name and date of birth.”

The victim reached out to Action 4 News claiming police weren't pursuing this case aggressively.

Police said they kept up with this case all along, but had to be patient in gathering information from state agencies on the suspect.

The money allegedly in the wallet was not recovered, and they added it's highly unlikely that it will be.

Banda said in this case, victims would have to pursue a civil case to try to recover that money from Sanchez.
