Traffic came to a standstill on the westbound lanes of Expressway 83 in Mercedes on Thursday afternoon.
Authorities diverted traffic to the frontage road after a pickup truck rear-ended an 18-wheeler.
It all happened on Expressway 83 just west of the Rio Grande Valley Premium Outlets around 1p.m. Thursday.
Mercedes Police Chief Olga Maldonado said both drivers were airlifted for treatment.
Rescuers told Action 4 News that the driver of the pickup truck was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extracted.
Investigators said the trucker had minor injuries.
The medical condition of the pickup truck driver was not immediately available but Chief Maldonado said he sustained serious injuries.
