It's the first week of classes but authorities are reminding UTPA students about the consequences of drinking and driving.

Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) went to the University of Texas Pan American campus to talk to students.

It's all part of a nationwide effort to crackdown on drunk driving.

Students got to dress up in orange jumpsuits and take a mug shot from behind a set of fake jail bars.

The students mugshots will be posted on the TxDOT's @DriveSober Instagram account.

A stimulated jail cell was brought to the campus lawn to give students a look inside what a room would be like in jail.

TxDOT employees discussed the consequences of a DWI arrest and conviction.

Between August 19 and September 5, law enforcement officers will be working overtime to enforce DWI laws.

A DWI arrest and conviction in Texas can cost up to $17,000 or more.

Fees include car towing, impoundment, bail, attorney fees, court costs, hearing and fees to regain and retain driver’s license, DWI fine, probation costs, fees for extended proof of insurance, plus insurance rate hikes.

TxDOT reminds Texans: If you are caught drinking and driving, you will go to jail.
