Authorities report that preliminary autopsy results for a 4-month old boy who died Sunday reveal that the child suffered no physical trauma.
But San Benito police are still trying to figure out how the infant died.
Investigators said there is no clear evidence of a violent death, but they have to look at possibilities.
One of the possibilities is that the child died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, which is known as SIDS.
Police said the baby boy’s mother rushed him to the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen around 8 a.m. Sunday.
The boy was already dead upon arrival.
San Benito Police Chief Martin Morales spoke to Action 4 News about the ongoing investigation.
Chief Morales said final autopsy results could take months and the preliminary results do not mean the investigation is far from over.
Morales said there is a sense of relief in knowing the child did not suffer when he died, but now it's up to them to piece this case together.
"The crime scene itself will be very important,” Morales said. “Maybe that can turn up something, maybe the way the baby was positioned who, if anybody was sleeping with the baby, where the baby was sleeping, the items around the baby.”
Police first responded to a call of a possible child abandonment at the home on the 100 block of Norma Lee Lane.
That’s where officers found a 7-year--old girl that had been temporarily left alone, and that the mother had rushed the baby to the hospital.
Police said the child's mother has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
Child Protective Services removed the 7-year-old girl and another child from the home and placed them into the care of a relative.
