A standoff leading to a manhunt ended Saturday night north of Weslaco, but the man police were after remains on the run.

Law enforcement groups spared no efforts to help track down Jose Jaime Roque Munoz, 44.

They believed the man had barricaded himself inside a home on Mile 13 North, between Mile 2 and Mile 1 West.

Since early Saturday morning, Valley law enforcement groups surrounded the home.

They included the SWAT teams from Edinburg, McAllen, San Juan, Pharr Police Departments, plus the one from Cameron County, and DPS troopers and Texas Rangers.

When swat teams entered the home on Saturday afternoon, they found no one inside.

One of the investigators said they later saw a man running towards the sugar cane fields surrounding the home.

DPS and other agencies set up a perimeter around the fields, where they spent much of the evening searching.

"This individual we do know that he does have a past history, a criminal past history,” DPS Spokesperson Trooper Johnny Hernandez said. “We do know that he probably is armed and dangerous so that’s why we’re not taking any changes."

DPS called off the search for Roque Munoz late Saturday night.

Sources close to the investigation told Action 4 News the case was connected to the Zetas drug cartel.

However, authorities would not comment on the specifics of the case, saying it remained under investigation.

But police added that Roque Munoz is tied to a deadly hit and run accident near La Villa.

They said he was the man driving a motorcycle on Mile 2 West and Mile 14 and a Half North nearly two weeks ago.

Investigators said he apparently lost control and crashed, leaving Melinda Ann Guerra, 44, to die on the road.

Anyone with information can call the Weslaco DPS office at (956) 565-7600.
