Endangered species, fuel seized in Veracruz traffic stop

Authorities are trying to find a home for several endangered species of animals seized during a traffic stop in the State of Veracruz.

It all happened on the highway between Agua Dulce and Minatitlan in the southern Veracruz on Tuesday.

Mexico’s Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) reported that soldiers were out on patrol when they came across a truck.

The soldiers took a closer look and found the driver had live parrots, toucans, pheasants, turtles and crocodiles.

Some of them animals seized were listed as endangered species.

SEDENA officials said the driver also had an ocelot skin and containers with 476 gallons of gasoline and 5 gallons of diesel fuel. 

Soldiers arrested the driver and turned over the animals, ocelot skin and fuel over to federal officials for further investigation.

Minatitlán, Ver., a 1/o. de agosto de 2012.- La Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional a través de las Comandancias de la VI Región Militar y 29/a. Zona Militar informa a la opinión pública que en el marco de la Estrategia Integral del Estado Mexicano en contra del Narcotráfico y la Delincuencia Organizada, el día 31 de julio del presente año, personal militar jurisdiccionado a este mando territorial en coordinación con autoridades de la Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente, al realizar reconocimientos terrestres en  el tramo carretero Agua dulce - Minatitlan, Ver., detuvo a una persona en posesión de  animales considerados en peligro de extinción como a continuación se indica:
 
• Un hocofaisan.
• Un loro cabeza azul.
• Un loro cabeza amarilla.
• Tres cotorras cuchas.
• Dos tucanes.
• Una cotorra guayacanera.
• Un tejón.
• Dos cocodrilos de pantano.
• Seis tortugas pintas.
• Cinco tortugas chopontil.
• Dos tortugas casquito.

Asimismo, en el mencionado lugar se aseguró una piel disecada de tigrillo, 1,805 litros de gasolina, 20 litros de diesel y un vehículo.

La persona detenida y lo asegurado fueron puestos a disposición de las autoridades correspondientes.
