Abel Gomez retakes Cameron County Pct. 2 seat

Abelardo "Abel" Gomez Jr. will soon be returning to the top lawman post at the Cameron County Courthouse.

Gomez has unseated incumbent Pete Avila Jr. in the Democratic Party runoff for Pct. 2 Constable.

According to the Cameron County Elections Department, Gomez got 4,351 votes or about 52 percent of the ballot.

Avila received 4,000 votes or around 48 percent of ballots cast.

Gomez had previsouly served as constable but lost his seat.

Without a Republican challenger in November, Gomez is expected to walk into office.
