Authorities are investigating how eight stolen tanker trucks ended up abandoned on a highway in southern Veracruz.

Mexico’s Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) reported that soldiers made the discovery in the City of Minatitlan on Tuesday.

Soldiers were patrolling a highway when they came across eight abandoned tanker trucks.

SEDENA officials said three of the eight tankers had been reported stolen.

The tankers contained a total of:

• 17,171 gallons of gasoline
• 3,962 gallons of diesel
• 2,641 gallons of crude oil

No arrests were reported but federal officials continue to investigate the incident.

Minatitlan is located in souther Veracruz near the state's border with Tabasco and some 1,262 miles south of Matamoros.

Zona Militar informa a la opinión pública que en el marco de la Estrategia Integral del Estado Mexicano en contra del Narcotráfico y la Delincuencia Organizada, el día 24 de julio del presente año, como resultado de los reconocimientos terrestres realizados por tropas castrenses, sobre la carretera antigua a Minatitlán, a la altura del kilómetro cero del municipio de Minatitlán, Ver., localizaron ocho tractocamiones abandonados de los cuales tres resultaron con reporte de robo y al ser revisados se logró el aseguramiento de lo siguiente:

• 62, 000 litros de gasolina.
• 15, 000 litros de diesel.
• 10, 000 litros de petróleo crudo.

Lo asegurado fue puesto a disposición de las autoridades correspondientes.
