Crash victims identified as illegal immigrants

Investigators said a 14th person has died following the crash of a pickup truck loaded down with almost dozen dozen illegal immigrants in Goliad County.

The accident happened in a rural area of Goliad County late Sunday evening.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Senior State Trooper Gerald L. Bryant told Action 4 News that the nine survivors of the accident remain listed in critical condition.

Bryant said that state troopers believe that a defective tire may be to blame for the accident.

Information about the driver was not immediately available but Bryant said that the truck involved in the accident was registered out of Houston.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Greg Palmore told the Associated Press that the 11 men and three females died in the accident.

Palamore reported that that the 14 dead are illegal immigrants from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala.

Authorities told the Associated Press that 23 people were packed into the pickup when it ran off the road and crashed into trees.
