Authorities are investigating the death of an 8-year-old boy who allegedly drowned in an above ground swimming pool.

It all happened on the 1400 Rodriguez Street on Harlingen’s southside around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Family members told Action 4 News that they are now planning the funeral of little Edward Martinez III.

Edward’s mother said the Milam Elementary School student was in about two and a half feet of water inside an above ground pool.

She said the boy's father went inside the house to get a popsicle for Edward but found the boy face down when he came back outside.

Harlingen police told Action 4 News that Edward’s death appears to be accidental but the case remains under investigation.
