A number of Facebook and Twitter fans gathered in McAllen to celebrate Social Media Day on Saturday.
It all took place at the new Costa Messa restaurant off North 10th Street early Saturday afternoon.
McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez officially proclaimed Saturday as Social Media Day in the city.
Organizers said the event drew people curious about social media and others looking to improve their skills.
“We have all walks of life here,” organizer Lebby Salinas said. “We have people who are novices here. We have people who have been doing social media for years. We're here to share and to connect with others and learn from each other."
Salinas said social media is changing the way Rio Grande Valley companies do business and how they make money.
“This is not selling products,” Salinas said. “It's actually getting customers to understand who they are and what they're about and to reach people at a more personal level. Absolutely, it would definitely increase people's business if they embrace it."
The three women behind McAllen's Cupcake Factory made a special cameo at the event.
They told the crowd that they've seen their Facebook page grow from 2,800 fans to more than 10,000 since winning the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” competition last week.
