A Harlingen man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly punched a dog because it left excrement on the floor of his room.

Harlingen police arrested 19-year-old Jaime Lopez on animal cruelty and two counts of Class C misdemeanor assault charges over the weekend.

Investigators told Action 4 News that officers were called to a home on the 16000 block of Orange Drive around 3 a.m. Saturday.

A woman at the home told police that Lopez punched a 3-month-old dog four times because it defecated on the floor of his room.

The woman also told police that Lopez beats the dog every day.

Lopez grabbed a woman who tried to intervene and slapped another.

Neither the two women nor the dog appeared to have any visible injuries.

The Harlingen man faced a judge on Sunday morning where he was issued a $5,000 dollar bond for animal cruelty and fined $1,128 dollars for the assaults.
