A San Benito man is facing criminal charges after causing a DWI wreck, fleeing the scene and fight with police officers who tried to arrest him.

San Benito police arrested Roberto Alonso on multiple criminal charges over the weekend.

Investigators told Action 4 News that it all started with a multiple car accident off the frontage road of Expressway 77/83 and Sam Houston Boulevard around 11:33 p.m. Friday.

Alonso allegedly caused the accident while driving a red Ford pickup and then fled the scene on foot.

Police officers found an 18 pack of beer with empty cans inside the cab of the truck and then tracked Alonso down to his home off Gene Moody Drive.

Alonso allegedly fought with police officers who tried to arrest him and was taken to a local hospital for a mandatory DWI blood test due to a child possibly being injured in the accident.

Police charged Alonso with felony DWI, resisting arrest and three charges for the hit and run accident.

Alonso appeared before San Benito Municipal Judge Adolfo Cordova who issued $6,500 dollars in bonds.
