A motion to ask Cameron County District Armando Villalobos to step down has died on the vine following a stalemate between county commissioners.

Cameron County commissioners met on Thursday morning where the motion to ask Villalobos to voluntarily step down was on the agenda.

The district attorney is facing a formidable legal and political hurdle after a federal grand jury indicted him and an Austin attorney for racketeering.

The case is connected to the Abel Limas "cash for court favors" scandal.

Villalobos maintains his innocence and that the charges were politically motivated to sabotage his bid for Congress.

Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos has been Villalobos' most outspoken critic in asking the district attorney to resign.

Both Cascos and Pct. 3 County Commissioner David Garza voted in favor of the motion to ask Villalobos to voluntarily step down.

Commissioners Ernie Hernandez and Sofia Benavides voted against the motion.

Pct. 4 County Commissioner Dan Sanchez could have served as a tie breaker but was not present at the meeting.

A motion to request a transcript in the trial of attorney Ray Marchan, who was accused in the Abel Limas scandal, also died in a similar vote.
