Authorities are investigating the cause of an overnight fire that gutted a maquiladora on the eastside of Matamoros.

It all happened at a maquiladora in the Ciudad Industrial area of Matamoros around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters fought a large blaze there through the early morning hours.

Authorities reported that the fire is under control but investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.

The fire happened in an area across the border across the Rio Grande River from Brownsville's Southmost neighborhood and a couple miles south of Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport.

It's not clear if toxic chemicals or materials were burned in the fire but officials confirmed plastics were burned.

Matamoros residents shared photos of the fire and smoke on the social media network Twitter.

Brownsville Fire Chief Lenny Perez said his men were not called for assistance and not told of any risks.
