There was a loud snap and then flames.

A Harlingen family had to move quickly to escape injury from a fire that left them and three other families homeless.

It all happened at the Aimee Apartments on North 26th Street in Harlingen around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Harlingen Fire Department investigators, the flames quickly spread from Apartment 16 and then to several others.

A man was still inside the apartment with his baby.

He was unable to get out through the door but noticed a neighbor standing below the window.

The man dropped his baby son down to the neighbor who caught the child without any problems.

A total of four apartments were destroyed.

Some people were treated for smoke inhalation but no serious injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The unit was equipped with smoke detectors but the tenants told Action 4 news that they did not go off.
