A federal judge has postponed the trial date for indicted Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos until August.
Villalobos and an attorney from Austin are facing a federal racketeering indictment but both of them maintain their innocence.
Citing extensive audio recordings and evidence, Villalobos asked U.S. District Court Judge Andrew S. Hanen for his trial to be postponed until February.
But Judge Hanen issued an order on Thursday postponing jury selection for the case until August 30th.
Villalobos maintains his innocence and vowed to stay in his office and an eight-way race in the Democratic Party primaries for the newly-created U.S. Congress District 34 seat.
Rival candidate Juan Angel Guerra, acting on behalf of a Harlingen resident, filed a legal petition to have Villalobos removed as district attorney.
A hearing for the petition is expected to be held before visiting Judge Manuel Banales in the 444th State District Court in Brownsville at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
