Authorities are trying to determine if human bones found on an island in the Brownsville Ship Channel could be those of a missing illegal immigrant.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said fisherman found the bones on an island just west of Port Road on Saturday.

The fishermen reported their find to authorities who uncovered a skull, jawbone, ribs and a spinal chord.

Sheriff Lucio said there was no flesh on the bones indicating that the remains had been there for months.

Lucio said that investigators also found a raft, clothes, shoes and a duffel bag on the island.

Deputies checked with the Mexican Consulate in Brownsville where officials reported that they had a missing persons case from three months ago.

Sheriff Lucio said authorities are testing the remains found to determine if they are those of the missing Mexican immigrant from Tampico.

The test results are expected to take several days.
