Sheriff: Masked gunmen shot indiscriminately, mowing people down

Several people are dead following a shooting reported at a cockfighting match north of La Blanca.

It all happened in a rural area on FM 493 north of Monte Cristo Road early Thursday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that several people had been reported as shot.

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating the incident.

Details are not immediately available but at least three people are dead.

Eight other people reportedly survived the attack and were taken to various local hospitals. Their conditions are not immediately known.

Sheriff Lupe Treviño told Action 4 News that there was a cockfighting operation underway with a large crowd of people when masked gunmen showed up.

Treviño said two to four gunmen began shooting indiscriminately "mowing people down."

A motive has not been determined but Sheriff Treviño said the cockfighting operation was "pretty elaborate."

According to the sheriff, the operation had several small arenas, a concession stand and plenty of room for roosters.

Sheriff Treviño said  the cockfighting ring orgainizers even sold beer and cigarettes to patrons.

Border Patrol agents have been called in to assist while authorities search for other possible victims in the area.

No suspects have been identified or reported as arrested.

Action 4 News will provide more details as they become available.
