McAllen Public Works Director Carlos Sanchez told Action 4 News that they have collected more brush and debris in a week than they do in a month.

"We collected anywhere from 20 to 25,000 cubic yards already." said Sanchez.

The bags of brush still keep piling up down every street and on every corner.

Even with all hands on deck, the amount of debris that has come in is making it difficult for all 239 publics works employees to keep up.

The demand has forced them to work through the Easter holiday.

"As citizens continue making repairs to their homes debris is continuing to come to the curbside,” said Sanchez. “We want to make sure we're staying on top of that so it doesn't become a larger issue."

Sanchez said the last time he saw debris of this magnitude was during Hurricane Dolly.

At that time, he said, the city had plenty of time to prepare.

"We prepared and pre-staged equipment." said Sanchez.

That was not the case last Thursday.

Sanchez said if they do not get the debris picked up now and another storm makes it this way, the city could face even bigger problems.
