A 90-minute standoff with police ended peacefully in Weslaco Wednesday afternoon.

The 3-year-old, at the center of the ordeal, was taken out of harm's way by his mother after the standoff.

Police told Action 4 News that the couple living in a home on the corner of Utah Avenue and Clifton Street got into an argument.

That argument, police said, turned violent when the woman’s common law husband allegedly hit her in the head and threatened her with a gun.

They said the woman, fearing for her life, ran out of the home while the couple’s young son remained inside.

When police arrived on the scene they set up a perimeter and tried to talk the suspect out of the home.

90-minutes later the suspect walked outside and surrendered.

Police said the suspect never directly threatened his young son, but did put him in harm’s way.

“The child was never directly threatened,” Officer JP Rodriguez said. “Just being subjected to this type of circumstance involving a firearm--the child is in danger."
