One person is killed in a fiery crash just north of Combes.

According to state troopers, the driver of a Nissan passenger car driving north on the expressway hit another car then drove across the median into southbound traffic near Orphanage Road.

The Nissan ran head on into a red truck and then burst into flames.

The driver of the car died at the scene.

Witnesses told Action 4 News the driver of the Nissan had been driving erratically seconds before the accident.

The crash remains under investigation but the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) identified the driver as 28-year-old Walter De La Rosa of Nacogdoches.

Viewer Yohana Sanchez said via Facebook that her boyfriend was one of the first people on the scene to try to rescue De La Rosa.

Sanchez's boyfriend reported that he tried to rescue De La Rosa and wasn't able to.

The Rio Grande Valley man said De La Rosa did not respond to him when he called to him.
