The makeshift memorial for McAllen High School freshman Marissa Bauman continues to grow at the intersection where she was hit and killed by a vehicle early Friday morning while walking to school.
Her father Clyde Bauman retraced her final steps on Tuesday with the Speedzapper.
"This is what she did," he said while walking across Harvey Drive at 21st Street.
The continued support for his daughter brings Clyde to tears.
"It's sad," he said. "You know it's really sad."
McAllen police are reconstructing the accident to determine the vehicle's speed at the time of the crash.
The posted limit is 30 miles per hour.
It doesn't take the Speedzapper long to see why neighbors in the area have complained how the law is often ignored.
Speedzapper: You're going 42 miles per hour... Did you know you're speeding in an area where a student was just killed here?
Speeder: "Sorry."
Marissa's family is withholding judgment against the female driver who struck and killed their loved one until the final results of the police investigation are released.
The driver in question did stop to render aid and submitted to testing, according to police.
But Marissa's father believes there's a lack of safety measures in place at the intersection where the accident occurred.
"The kids don't have a choice but to walk in the street," he said.
Without sidewalks and crosswalks between Bicentennial and 23rd Street outside the school zone, Clyde fears more students could be hurt.
Lino Ochoa represents the Bauman family in their quest for answers into their daughter’s death.
"If the average person came out here and looked at the different streets in the area and they're going to be walking to McAllen high... There's not a place for them to cross safely... At any time of the day," Lino explained.
They both would like to see 4-way stop signs at the intersection where Marissa died.
Lino believes not having one has already proved to be a matter of life and death.
"So how's a student supposed to walk safely to school when you have these intersections that cross with no stop signs," Lino asked?
Marissa's classmates gathered Tuesday after school at the makeshift memorial.
They say they've lost a dear friend and don't want another student to die because of unaddressed safety hazards.
"We need crosswalks and sidewalks," one student said.
"They go over 30," another student added. "They're easily going 45-50 miles per hour."
Marissa's friends and family are pushing for change in honor of their loved one whose life is forever lost.
Mike Perez, McAllen’s city manager, emailed this statement to the Speedzapper late Tuesday afternoon regarding the possibility for safety changes at the intersection:
“The City of McAllen is deeply saddened by the loss of 16 year McAllen High School student, Marissa Bauman, who died in Friday’s fatal accident. The City offers its condolences to her family, friends and relatives. We will await the findings of the McAllen Police Department’s investigation into this accident. It would be speculative or premature for us to comment at this time.“
