A Mexican man and a Rio Grande Valley woman are behind bars north of Corpus Christi after a traffic stop yielded more than $134,000 dollars in cash.
It all happened on U.S. Highway 59 just outside Edna around 2:26 p.m. Saturday.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers arrested Samuel S. Rodriguez and Lidia Maldonando Guerrero on second-degree money laudering charges.
The two were inside a Nissan Sentra when a state trooper pulled them over for a traffic violation.
A search of the car revealed 14 bundles with $134,800 dollars of cash hidden inside.
State troopers are now investigating where the cash came from and where it was headed.
Investigators said Rodriguez is from Tamaulipas and Maldonado-Guerrero is from McAllen.
Both of them appeared before a judge over the weekend where they were each issued $50,000 dollar bonds.
The seizure happened on the same highway near where a Hidalgo County Pct. 1 Constable candidate Roberto Ricardo Maldonado was caught with more than $1 million dollars in cash.
Investigators say there's no reason at this time to believe that the cases are linked.
