Gas prices are creeping up to $4 per gallon here in the Rio Grande Valley but south of the border they’re staying closer to $3 bucks.
The average price for regular unleaded in the Valley is about $3.49 per gallon.
Experts say the price of a gallon of gasoline is only expected to get higher by Memorial Day.
But subsidies by PEMEX are keeping gas prices in Reynosa, Matamoros and other Mexican border cities cheaper:
Regular Unleaded
9.91 pesos per liter = $3.08 per gallon
Supreme Unleaded
10.69 pesos per liter = $3.33 per gallon
Diesel
10.27 pesos per liter = $3.19 gallon
There are gas stations located near the Mexican side of the Veterans, Los Indios, Progreso and Pharr International Bridges.
But despite the lower gas prices, large numbers of Americans are not crossing the border in search of a better deal.
There’s some math involved to convert it to dollars per gallon:
8.76 pesos x 3.785 liters x $1 dollar = $2.68 dollars
--------------- ---------------- -------------------- --------------------
1 liter 1 gallon 12.35 pesos gallon
The Mexican government has created an on-line list of federal inspection results for every gas station in Mexico.
