BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (AP) -- A probationer who pleaded guilty last year to wire fraud for bribing a state judge has been sentenced to 27 months in prison.

Armando Pena of Corpus Christi was ordered Tuesday to serve three years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen.

Prosecutors say the 30-year-old Pena went to Arkansas without permission and paid $1,500 to former state District Judge Abel Limas, who exempted him from reporting to a probation officer in person.

The change allowed Pena to report by mail.

Limas has pleaded guilty to racketeering and awaits sentencing. Authorities say Limas accepted thousands of dollars to appoint attorneys and grant favorable rulings.

Pena was on probation for aggravated robbery. His wife, Karina Pena, also pleaded guilty to the wire fraud charge and awaits sentencing.
