United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson and acting U.S. Marshal Elizabeth Saenz announced that after 22 years on the run, Macario Garcia Jr., was arrested in Weslaco.

The 54-year-old man from Mexico had a warrant for his arrest dating back to September 1989.

In connection with a pending drug charge, Garcia was required to appear in federal court on Sept. 12, 1989 but failed to do so.

On Sept. 19, 1989, the warrant for his arrest was issued as a result of Garcia being prosecuted by a federal grand jury for failing to appear.

“22 years of looking over your shoulder is no way to live,” said Saenz. “Macario Garcia Jr. learned today what many fugitives before him have learned. We will never give up, we will never stop and justice will prevail.”

The fugitive, of 22 years, appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos on Thursday morning.

Garcia has been temporarily detained without bond pending arraignment.

A detention hearing is set for Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012.

If he does not appear to this hearing, he faces up to five years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.
