A San Benito middle school is mourning the death of one of their own following a fatal Saturday night wreck.

It all happened on the southbound lanes of Expressway 77/83 near Rancho Viejo around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Brownsville police told Action 4 News that the 14-year-old boy died of his injuries at a Brownsville hospital.

San Benito Consolidated Independent School District confirmed the death of the Miller Jordan Middle School student today.

According to Brownsville police, the teen was among several passengers in an SUV involved a single-vehicle accident.

Investigators said another teenager was driving the SUV.

Chess pieces, a drum stick, shattered car parts and a damaged metal rail still remained at the site of the crash on Monday morning.

Brownsville Police Department spokesman J.J. Treviño said investigators do not know what caused the accident.

"Two people were ejected, apparently three suffered minor injuries, one of the persons that was ejected ended up being deceased at Valley Regional Medical Center,” Treviño said. “At this point the investigation is still under investigation and they are looking for charges that might apply.”

San Benito Superintendent Antonio Limon issued a statement about the student’s death.

"We are saddened to learn that one of our students was involved in a car accident which claimed his life this weekend,” Limon said in the statement. “Wwe would like to extend our condolences to his family.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time.”

Police have not released the teen's name but school district officials are providing counselors at the school to help students cope with the loss.

Teachers and students are also collecting funds to help the family with funeral expenses.
