Sounds of construction surround Harwell Middle School in Edinburg.

Work on a wall to protect students from stray bullets is underway.

Hidalgo County agreed to provide equipment for the project, after bullets from nearby hunting grounds hit and injured two students.

"It's unfortunate the tragedy that occured to those two young boys," said Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia.

But Harwell Middle School is just one Hidalgo County school in harms way.

La Joya Independent School District has two schools close to hunting grounds.

School District Police Chief Raul Gonzalez said he's asked their owners to exercise more caution when shooting.

It's a request Gonzalez thinks will help prevent a student shooting.

Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia hopes Gonzalez will reconsider.

"If there's a safety issue I mean I think it would be wrong for them to not come by and talk to the County Commissioner and the Commissioners' Court about seeing what we can do to work together to address it," said Garcia.

Chief Gonzalez told Action 4 News construction of a wall has not been discussed.

He said he did not know if it ever will be discussed.

Whether or not a wall is the school district's solution, Garcia said the county will help school districts to protect students.

The Edinburg Independent School District is funding construction of the wall around Harwell Middle School, while the county is supplying equipment.

Despite some school districts being strapped for cash, the Hidalgo County Judge said any school facing a threat like Harwell Middle School should discuss it with Commissioners' Court.
