Mexican authorities have confirmed that four gunmen and one soldier are dead following an intense battle in Nuevo Laredo.

It all happened off Boulevard Adolfo Ruiz Cortinez and Venustiano Carranza around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The intense gun battle generated a number of messages on the social media network Twitter, including warning from the American Consulate in Nuevo Laredo.

Mexico's Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) confirmed on Saturday that a group of gunmen from six vehicles opened fire on soldiers.

Residents reported that the battle lasted for some time and that a military helicopter was used to fire on the attackers.

SEDENA officials reported that four gunmen and one soldier were killed in the battle. Five soldiers were wounded and taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Authorities have not released the names of neither the gunmen not the fallen soldier.

But SEDENA officials and Mexican President Felipe Calderon issued a statement offering their condolences to the family of the fallen soldier saying that he died in the line of duty.

Soldiers reported seizing five assault rifles, ammunition and one vehicle at the scene.

No arrests have been made but the incident remains under investigation by federal authorities.
