More than $233,000 dollars worth of marijuana is off the streets after authorities found it hidden inside two statues of the patron saint for lost causes.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers told Action 4 News that it all happened at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge on Saturday.
Customs officers said a 20-year-old American citizen from McAllen drove up from Reynosa in a 2006 white Pontiac Vibe.
CBP officials said customs officers sent the car to secondary inspection where they took a look at large statues of San Judas Tadeo.
Authorities allegedly found 73 bundles with more than 233 pounds of marijuana inside two statues of the Catholic saint.
The driver was not arrested but turned over to U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for further questioning.
San Judas Tadeo is known as St. Jude in English and is the patron saint of lost causes.
The Catholic saint has become a common icon among drug smugglers and criminals on both sides of the border.
