Cries from a grieving mother filled the air Saturday outside the Holy Family Church in Brownsville.
Hundreds gathered to pay their final respects to 15-year-old Jaime Gonzalez.
He died Wednesday after he allegedly took a pellet gun to Cummings Middle School and pointed it at police.
Brownsville police officers shot the teen twice.
The outpour of support at his funeral did little to comfort the teens parents.
"I knew he was loved by everybody and it's just amazing, thank you,” Gonzalez, Sr. said.
Fellow students who knew Gonzalez attended the mass wearing “I love Jaime” shirts, some carried posters and they chanted his name as they rode on the back of trucks in the procession.
"He always (made)us laugh and he helped us out, and helped all the people,” friend Estrella Rodriguez said. “He always helped the people at church."
The teen’s Godmother, Graciela Arambul, was one of dozens of drivers who participated in the procession, leading to Buena Vista Funeral Home, where Gonzalez was buried.
Arambul said Gonzalez was an exceptional teen and that his death is a wakeup call for parents.
"Parents need to have more interaction with their children, be available when they need them,” Arambul said.
“If they need your advice or if they did something wrong - we as parents sometimes get after them - but
instead, we should be like Jaime’s parents who were always there for him.”
Cameron County Sheriff's deputies and constables were on-hand to keep order and escort the multitude of cars to the burial.
No Brownsville police were present.
After laying his son to rest, Gonzalez’s father said he was grateful for the community support.
"I just want to say thank you to everybody that helped out, everybody that was here,” the grieving father said.
