The red tide made a resurgence over the weekend at the Rio Grande Valley’s coast.
Tony Reisinger, Cameron County’s extension agent for Coastal and Marine Services, said cell count for the red tide in the Laguna Madre registered at high to moderate levels during an inspection Wednesday afternoon.
The cell count along the beaches in South Padre Island remained low, but the Reisinger said aerosol concentrations are strong in the area, likely from a bloom farther off the coast.
Cameron County has issued an advisory for people with asthma and other respiratory problems, as well as for pets which are highly susceptible to the red tide particulates.
Reisinger added that cloud cover over the past few days has made it difficult to track red tide algae blooms off the coast though the sky.
He said a cold front, expected to arrive at the end of the week, could bring temporary relief.
