They went on an ammunition shopping spree across the Rio Grande Valley and now they're both behind bars.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents charged 37-year-old Guillermo Enrique Villarreal and 22-year-old Leoncio Sanchez, Jr. on Tuesday.
The two Brownsville men are accused of buying about 10,000 rounds of assault rifle ammunition in order to smuggle it to Mexico.
Court records show that HSI agents had the two men under surveillance.
Villarreal and Sanchez were seen buying the 7.62 x 39mm ammunition at sporting good stores in Brownsville, Weslaco and Edinburg on Monday.
Agents approached the men when they returned to Brownsville.
Sanchez told agents the ammo was headed for Mexico and that it was his third time going on such a shopping spree.
Both Sanchez and Villarreal appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Felix Recio in Brownsville on Tuesday morning.
Records show that both men are United States citizens.
Sanchez lives off Esperanza Road in the Southmost area of Brownsville while Villarreal lives at an apartment off Jose Marti Boulevard next to Sunrise Mall.
Judge Recio denied bond for both men until a Friday morning hearing.
