The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the victim killed in a car accident Saturday as 49-year-old Juan Jose Tamayo of Primera.

The crash happened near Mercedes along FM 491 around 8 a.m.

Authorities said two Mercedes teens were driving northbound in a Dodge Charger, when the driver lost control and struck Tamayo, as he was driving southbound in a Dodge pick-up.

The teens, a 17 and 14-year-old, remain hospitalized at a Harlingen hospital in stable conditions.

Authorities said unsafe speed and weather conditions played roles in the accident.
