Football fans across the Rio Grande Valley are throwing their support behind the Harlingen Cardinals.

“There is excitement from across the valley. The Valley community wants to follow the Cardinals” said Athletic Director Randy Cretors.

They pushed through another around of playoff defeating San Antonio Warren 53-21 on Saturday at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi.

Nearly 18,000 fans for both teams attended that game.

This week, The Cardinals will move on to play San Antonio Madison this Friday at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas which holds an estimated 15,000 people.

On Tuesday, 500 season ticket holders began purchasing their tickets.

They will be allowed to purchase the number of tickets they current hold on their card, plus an additional eight.

On Wednesday, ticket sales open up to the general public, but fans are already lined-up.

“We have received tons of calls from across the valley” said Coach Cretors.  “People are wanting to know about ticket sales, how they can get them, how much they are and if they can get them at the gate.”

An estimated 30 to 40 people brave the chilly weather camping out overnight to make sure they are the first in line Wednesday morning.

Cretors told Action 4 News it speaks volumes about Cardinal fans when they spend 36 hours in line at the Gordon Nix building to get their hands on tickets.

Fans, who were not just from the Harlingen area, pitched tents filled with blankets, food, radios and even televisions.

Security is also on hand to control potential line cutting.

A community pep rally will be held on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Boggus Stadium.

For now, the football team and the RGV community are focusing on a win.
