Smoke from a fire in Mexico is being kept low to the ground thanks to a weather phenomenon in the Mid-Rio Grande Valley.
Emergency Management Coordinator George Garrett spoke to Action 4 News.
Garrett said emergency workers in Weslaco, Donna, Progreso and surrounding communities have been flooded with phone calls about the low-lying smoke.
There are no reports of a fire on the American side of the border but Garrett said there's a fire on the Mexican side.
Garrett said the recent cold front and a a weather phenomenon called an 'inversion' is keeping the smoke low to the ground.
Authorities are asking Mid-Valley residents with respiratory problems to stay in their homes.
