No action will be taken against a pit bull at the center of an animal cruelty case in Harlingen through at least the holiday weekend, according to Juan Guerra, attorney for the dog’s owner.
“Champ” as gained national attention from people who wish to adopt him.
His owner, Jose Gonzales, has been charged in the case.
He spoke exclusively to Action 4 News on Monday to apologize for punching his pet in what he called “self defense.”
His attorney says the Harlingen Humane Society will not euthanize “Champ,” who's been taken off of a 10-day quarantine this week after reportedly biting his owner.
The shelter is expected to be served with court papers next week.
The temporary restraining order could force the shelter to leave “Champ” save until a judge decides what happens to the animal.
Gonzales has agreed to give the dog up for adoption.
