A judge has sentenced Harlingen City Commissioner Kori Marra to 30 days in jail but she's expected to be freed on bond peding her appeal.

Marra appeared for sentencing before visiting Judge J. Manuel Banales in Brownsville's County Court-at-law No. 3 on Monday morning.

A jury convicted Marra about two weeks ago with a failing to file a conflict of interest charge.

The city commissioner' was facing up to a year in jail but her defense team had been asking for Marra to received probation.

Some 12 people testified as character witnesses for Marra on Monday morning where they cited her community service.

After hearing the testimony, Judge Banales sentenced Marra to 30 days jail and a $500 dollar fine.

But Marra's defense team immediately filed an appeal and a request for a new trial.

Marra is in custody of the Cameron County Sheriff's Department but is expected to be released under a $1,000 dollar bond.

It's not immediately clear how the sentencing and appeal will affect her seat on the Harlingen City Commission.
